I'm really proud of this new CD. Once again, it features all original material, and includes one song written by my talented sister, Hilary Sloan, called "Some Things They Can't Take Away".
And once again, I've combined the talents of Ricky Davis on pedal steel guitar, Dave Biller on acoustic guitar, Ric Ramirez on upright bass, Timmy Campbell on drums and Yours Truly on fiddle. With this project, I asked Bill Kirchen if he would join us on lead guitar. He played some great stuff on this CD. But I did neglect to ask Bill to record on "Turn Around", which gave an opportunity for Tommy Detamore to play lead guitar. Tommy really helped make that song.
Jason Allen sings the harmonies and even did a George Jones/Melba Montgomery style duet on "Let's Start Over". I fell in love with Jason's singing awhile ago and I'm so proud that he was able to sing with me on this record.
But the songs - I try to keep my focus on the fact that (for me) it's all about the songs. I saw Jamey Johnson do an interview for his CD, "That Lonesome Road", and he said that the CD just basically represented a year and a half of his life, and I have to say that my past 2 CDs have certainly been that. They are a snapshot in time of things I was going through and the songs I wrote about those experiences and feelings. I guess I have my favorite songs, but I think this CD is just a window into me. Yeah, it's country. Maybe it's odd to be a songwriter and write country songs. Maybe it's not nouveau or hip enough. But it's all I hear in my head, so I don't apologize for it.
So here you go. Like "Between the Whiskey and the Wine", some are intensely personal. Some are a little bit of me mixed in with other people that I could relate to. But they're real songs from a real place and a real person, which is more than you'll get on most of the discs in Wal-Mart.
Hope you enjoy. And if you do, do me a favor and tell a friend.
